Why Am I Seeing This Promoted Post?

As the largest social learning network, our mission at Edmodo is to connect all learners with the people and resources they need to meet their full potential. We have recently begun experimenting with promoted content to help us deliver on this mission and keep Edmodo free and accessible to learners everywhere. We are currently testing and iterating to make this new program work as well as possible for all learners on Edmodo.

Please see this post from our CEO, Vibhu Mittal, for additional information.

What is promoted content?

Promoted content is a program to surface helpful educational resources to our community. This content will include offerings from Edmodo, unpaid “public service” messages from your school or district, or other education organizations (e.g., Teacher of the Year and other announcements), and sponsored, i.e., paid, content from select partners.

We are being very selective in the brands and content providers we work with. Our goal is to work with only providers that will positively impact your experience on Edmodo.

We are currently testing different versions of promoted content and will be making updates to best meet the needs of our community.

Why is Edmodo adding sponsored content?

As the largest social learning network in the world, Edmodo fosters curiosity, communication and collaboration amongst teachers, students, parents and administrators. Our mission is to connect all learners with the people and resources they need to meet their full potential. We believe that sponsored content directly ties into our mission by allowing us to keep the platform free for teachers and students everywhere. We are being very thoughtful in our approach to sponsored content and are focused on delivering content that our community will find useful.

How is Edmodo protecting the privacy of its users with sponsored content?

Created by educators for educators, we have a direct relationship with the teachers, parents, students, and administrators using our platform. Because of that, there is nothing more important to Edmodo than upholding the trust that is placed in us. That’s why we’ve built so many privacy protections directly into our product, and it’s why we have adopted such strong, privacy-protective internal policies and practices.

To be clear, Edmodo will not use personally identifiable information to engage in behavioral targeting of our users, and Edmodo will not build personal profiles on users to target sponsored content to them. We have always understood and recognized that parents, teachers, and administrators are concerned about how personal information could be used by technology companies. Those concerns are one of the big reasons why Edmodo was created in the first place: to provide a school-specific, privacy-protective alternative to consumer-based social media networks. Our growth over the last 8 years is in great part because of our constant focus on protecting the privacy of our users.

No sponsored content will knowingly be shown to students under the age of 13. Edmodo was one of the original fourteen signatories to the Student Privacy Pledge, which now has over 300 signatories, and Edmodo will continue to lead the education technology industry to ensure that all learners can benefit from technology and have their privacy rights protected at the same time. For more details on our commitment to privacy and how we protect our users' privacy, please see the Privacy Toolkits that we have created for our users and our Privacy webpage, here.

How do you source/vet content providers?

We are being very selective in the content providers we work with and the content that will be displayed. Our goal is to deliver content that the Edmodo community will find useful and that is consistent with our mission. Much of this content will be developed in partnership with brands that are committed to helping bring the best educational resources to the learners on Edmodo. We are also working with a select few sponsored content providers who will deliver the quality of content we’re looking for and that is relevant for our users.

Because of the immense trust our users place in us, we have implemented a number of steps to try to ensure that no harmful or inappropriate content is shown to our users, including having an internal team made up of former teachers review sponsored content to remove any that does not meet our strict standards.

Will students see sponsored content?

Promoted content will be available to students who are 13 years of age and older. As with all promoted content, we will never use personally identifiable information or build profiles on users to target content to them, and we will not provide content providers with any user’s personal information. In addition, we have an internal team of former teachers who will be reviewing all content to ensure no harmful or inappropriate material is shown to minors.

Can I see an example of promoted content?

Stay tuned for more examples!

Can I turn off promoted content or opt-out of promoted content?

Users will have the immediate ability to hide any content they are not interested in, as well as to report any content they find inappropriate.

To opt out of promoted content, please have a School or District Administrator contact our Admin Support Team to discuss potential options.

How can I share feedback on Sponsored Content with Edmodo?
